Although the site was originally built in 1923, the first permanent stands were added in 1925. The facility was named the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to honor university students and personnel that died during World War I. Subsequent expansions to the field were added in 1929, 1949, 1957, 1963, 1975, 1980, and 1984. In 2002 additional improvements and capacity began. The stadium was renamed to its current name in honor of the Gaylord family's donation to this effort. Today, it's seating capacity is 80,126 making it the second largest stadium in the Big 12 conference.
